PANJIM: Some miscreants torched cashew orchard near Keri-Ponda main road belonging to late Surya Janu Jalmi, on Friday afternoon around 2.30 pm.
The fire intensified rapidly due to the high temperature recorded in the State in the last few days. Local Sainath Jalmi, who was passing by, tried to douse fire with the help of tree branch leaves but to no success.

The Keri fire tender was then informed but the fire brigade broke down after reaching Arla-Keri. Ponda Fire Station officials then called another fire brigade and brought the fire under control after nearly one hour of operation.
There was a delay in informing the fire tender as the orchard owners stay quite far from the farm. However, the fire would have posed a threat to houses in the vicinity.
