Casinos should continue in River Mandovi: Lobo

Says casinos are addressing the unemployment problem and contributing to the State’s treasury

MAPUSA: Stating that the six offshore casinos in River Mandovi are in a way addressing the unemployment problem and contributing to the State’s treasury, Ports Minister Michael Lobo on Tuesday felt that these vessels should continue their operations since they provide unique adventure for tourists as well.

After inaugurating a bank branch in Calangute, Lobo said, “The six offshore casinos are generating revenue for the State in form of GST, ticket fees, licence renewals including Excise, FDA, pollution etc. These casinos also provide employment to over 400 people from across the country including locals”.

“We are debating on the removal of offshore casinos from River Mandovi by shifting them to Mopa for a live gaming setup. However, I feel that the offshore casinos should continue to operate in River Mandovi as they are not only about gambling but provide a unique gaming experience for the tourists as well”, the minister said.

“There are six casinos operating in River Mandovi. However, in future if there’s a move to shift them, then I suggest that two or three casinos should be shifted to River Chapora and River Zuari. This shifting will help revive the State’s economy and the tourism industry to flourish with high-end tourists visiting Goa”, the minister added.

Lobo informed that the La Calypso incident is a trespass and police have taken necessary action. The accused have been remanded to 10 days police custody. A strong message should be sent across the State that no one can just trespass into a casino when there are guests and tourists. Casino finally provides employment and generates revenue to the State.

“I am not against casinos but I am against the entry of Goans into casinos. In other countries, locals are not allowed in casinos as they (casinos) are part of the tourism industry and the same should be replicated in Goa too,” Lobo added.
