PANJIM: Catholics in Goa and around the world celebrated Palm Sunday today which marks the beginning of the Holy Week.
Palm fronds were blessed and carried by the faithful to signify the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that culminates in the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus on Easter.
Blessing of palm fronds is followed by Eucharistic celebrations. Later in the evening, the faithful hold processions by reciting rosary and carrying images of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary re-enacting the Passion of Christ.
In Panjim, a life-size statue of Jesus taking a cross was taken in a procession in the evening to mark the Passion of Christ.
Crowds of faithful gathered in Churches to kiss the blessed fronds to symbolize how worshippers greeted Jesus over 2,000 years ago as he triumphantly returned to Jerusalem.
