Caution Tape Illusion: Smart City Works Expose Alarming Safety Gaps in Panjim

Goa has been jolted by a recent tragic accident in Panjim, resulting in the loss of a young life due to the haphazard ‘Smart City’ works. Despite assurances from the Managing Director of Smart City, Sanjit Rodrigues, that “all safety measures are properly followed,” an investigation by Team Herald reveals a starkly different reality at the construction sites in the capital.

Contrary to the promises made, our on-site inspection uncovered a concerning lack of safety measures at multiple Smart City project locations. The only safety precaution observed was the presence of a ‘Caution Tape,’ with insufficient barricades and inadequate lighting, especially during nighttime operations. This negligent approach to safety is posing a serious risk to the lives of commuters.

Tragically, two lives have already been lost at different Smart City project sites. The absence of proper safety infrastructure, including barriers and lighting, has contributed to these unfortunate incidents. It is imperative that officials recognize the urgency of the situation and implement effective measures to safeguard the lives of the people.

The recent accidents in Panjim underscore the pressing need for Smart City authorities to reevaluate and enhance their safety practices. The public’s trust is at stake, and swift action is required to ensure that ongoing projects prioritize the safety and well-being of the people. Only through a comprehensive and immediate response can Smart City projects regain the confidence of the community they aim to serve.
