Acting on a complaint from the Cavelossim Villagers Union, officials of the Goa State Bio-diversity Board descended at the dockyard along with representatives of other government agencies to verify the status of the boat repair activity.
President of the Cavelossim Villagers Forum Irish Pasainha drew attention of the agencies on how the dockyard has been operating from the village for over 20 years without benefiting the people or the Panchayat body. The forum members demanded to know whether the owner had obtained prior permission of the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority or the Goa State Pollution Control Board before starting operations. He claimed that the sewage generated around the area finds its way in river Sal, polluting the river and damaging the marine life.
In another inspection, officials of the Goa Bio-diversity Board and other agencies inspected a low lying area at Cavelossim village following complaints of illegal land filling.
Passainha told the media after the inspection that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the illegal land filing and demanded action.
