Village Panchayat and its Disaster Management Committee (DMC) conducted a mock drill at Cavelossim ferry point as part of their disaster management plan.
“Three fishermen were ‘rescued’ and were given CPR by Drishti lifesaving personnel, who also assisted in this mock drill. An ambulance and local police were also present for the drill,” Dixon Vaz, Cavelossim Sarpanch and DMC chairman said.
It may be recalled that as part of the initiative to keep themselves prepared for the monsoon that is setting in, the village panchayat of Cavelossim had last month launched a 25-member-strong ‘Disaster management and Rescue team’.
For this the Cavelossim panchayat has got two vehicles equipped with basic equipment such as cutters, chain pulley block, ropes, pruners, portable generator, emergency lights, safety helmets, and other life-saving tools, in a first of its kind initiative by a village panchayat.
“We have selected the team from all sections such as fishermen, shack owners, water sports operators, nurses, etc who have volunteered to be a part of the team and as panchayat we will support the team with all resources so that we can assist in case of emergencies,” said Vaz.
“We must be prepared for any emergencies in our village. We cannot wait for the government to respond all the time. If we take some responsibility, we can save lives and properties,” Vaz added.
