MARGAO: The residents of Cavrem, Quepem have submitted a letter to the Chief Minister and South Goa Collector highlighting their grievances due to the alleged uncontrolled ore transportation during the lockdown.
The villagers led by GAKUVED Federation claimed that the authorities are ignoring the violations by mining company in transporting ore during the lockdown.
Rupesh Velip, General Secretary of GAKUVED Federation said “We are observing uncontrolled ore transportation from TC 59/51 which is being carried out by the mining company. Hundreds of trucks are plying on the village roads and it is very difficult for the villagers to even cross the road. The present transportation is posing high risk to the life and health of the villagers”.
“The authorities are well aware that the nation is following a lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore we villagers are shocked to see the gross ignorance by authorities, who have failed to notice that the mining company is allowing the mining trucks to violate the traffic rules causing congestion on roads and undermining other laws in force,” GAKUVED Federation alleged. “Besides, no social distancing is being maintained by the truck drivers and the mine staff at the site,” the locals complained.
GAKUVED Federation has demanded initiating urgent steps failing which the authorities will be held responsible, the federation warned.
