PANJIM: Crime Branch (CB) that has launched a fresh investigation into the killing of gangster Vinayak Karbotkar in Sada sub jail, has begun interrogating the jail guards. There, however, has been no arrest of any suspect or accused till date.
CB SP Umesh Gaonkar said the investigation team is questioning the jail guards who were on duty when Karbotkar was attacked in a clash between jail inmates on the night on January 23. “We took over all the required documents (from Mormugao police) when the case was handed over to us for investigation. The jail guards, who were present on duty at the time of the incident in the jail premises, are being questioned,” he told Herald.
The deceased’s father Tulsidas Karbotkar had earlier this month approached the Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander demanding that the case be handed over to CB. He had accused the jail authorities and staff of three police stations for the fatal attack on his son.
Karbotkar, who was in jail and is also alleged to have murdered history sheeter Ashpak Bhengre in Colvale Jail in June 2016, was killed inside the sub jail at Vasco on January 23 after a fight broke out between two groups of prisoners. The First Information Report is registered under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempted murder) and other charges of the Indian Penal Code.
