CB seeks cancellation of Palekar’s bail in Banastarim accident case

PANJIM: The Crime Branch has sought cancellation of bail granted to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) State president Adv Amit Palekar in the horrific killer Merc accident case at Banastarim, alleging that bail conditions were violated by him by travelling abroad without prior permission of the Court.

The Additional Sessions Court, Ponda, has issued notice in this regard, and has fixed hearing in the matter on Friday afternoon.

The Crime Branch had arrested Amit Palekar, alleging his involvement in evidence tampering related to the fatal Mercedes accident in Banastarim on August 6, 2023 which claimed three lives and injured three others. The police had also accused Adv Palekar of producing a dummy driver before the Mardol Police Station immediately after the accident to save the Sawardekar couple. He was later released on conditional bail on August 31.

The alleged car driver Paresh Sawardekar, who was under the influence of alcohol, was arrested by the Mardol Police and later released on conditional bail.

Meanwhile, strongly criticising the application made by Crime Branch to the Ponda Additional Sessions Court to cancel the bail of AAP State President Adv Amit Palekar in the 2023 Banastarim accident case, the AAP State working president Valmiki Naik called it a clear case of political vendetta by the ruling BJP, and an attempt to silence the voice of Palekar.
