CBI has, however, refused to divulge any information stating the case is under investigation. Sources at CBI said that based on the allegation, facts are being verified. It has been alleged that Fernandes issued Indian passports to the people with criminal background and with cases pending in police station and in court.
CBI is investigating whether police verification, which is mandatory for an Indian Passport, was done or not. Sources said they are also investigating the process of issuing a passport. One case that has come to light is of Vasco resident, Jose Fernandes alias Deevod, who is a history sheeter with a couple of cases pending at the police station. It has been alleged that he left the country and was working abroad, CBI sources said, adding the is presently under investigation.
CBI had raided Fernandes’ residence at Nuvem on Wednesday and seized some documents, as well as Indian and foreign currency. CBI also seized 100 bottles of foreign liquor, for which Goa Excise has also registered a separate offence against Fernandes.
