CCF: Illegal road destroying Coastal ecology at Gauravaddo

MAPUSA: Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) has yet again highlighted how the local authorities are responsible for destruction of Coastal beach. In a letter to Member Secretary Goa Coastal Zone Management and Chief Secretary, the CCF highlighted illegal construction of road with 3 metres width and 200 metre length in property bearing survey No 129 at Gauravado Calangute West which is a no development zone and within 20 metres of High Tide Line.

The forum said that the concerned person has destroyed the existing beach vegetation, sand dunes and white ‘golden’ sand in order to construct illegal access road by using red mud, rubbles and construction debris and that the Village Panchayat Calangute is completely aware of it.

CCF further pointed out that the right to ecology and environment of the natural beach cover and its biodiversity is shared with the future generations under Article 21 of the Constitution and said that this is a destructive development on the Beach Coastal area of Calangute.

The forum said that concerned culprit has completely violated the Provision of Environment Protection Act 1986 and the Biological Diversity Act 2002.

National Green Tribunal has directed the authorities of Goa Government to keep strict check on environmental destruction and initiate prompt action to stop the same with proper coordination of respective departments. However, the concerned person has completely violated the norms of CRZ Rules and Environment Protection Act 1986, the forum alleged.
