MAPUSA: The Calangute Constituency Forum on Tuesday demanded that the State government revoke the notification declaring Calangute as urban area.

CCF President Premanand Diukar has also asked the Calangute Panchayat to issue a white paper on the resolution taken by the Special Body Meeting on June 9, which decided to write to the State government to denotify the status only after the villagers raised objections and demanded to revert back Calangute its rural image.
The CCF said that the government should have issued a public notice and also taken the people of Calangute into confidence when taking such a big decision of changing its rural status to urban.
The Forum claimed that during the Panchayat body meeting concluded on September 23, 2020, a resolution was passed to bring Calangute Village under the status of urban area, which was proposed by Sarpanch Shawn Martin and seconded by all the members present in the meeting.
“It is mandatory for the administration of Village Panchayat to place such (changing the status) proposal in the Gram Sabha before resolving the issue in the special body meeting and communicating the same to the government as per Panchayati Raj Act 1994,” said the CCF president.
“Surprisingly decision was neither discussed in the body meeting as claimed by the Panchayat members nor was it placed in the Gram Sabha for public consultation,” Diukar added.
