PANJIM: Former chairperson and present councillor of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) Balkrishna Hodarkar alias Pinty will join the Congress on Monday (June 28).
When contacted, Hodarkar confirmed that he will join the Congress in the next two days.
Hodarkar said he had worked for the Congress in 2007 Assembly elections when the party candidate Shyam Satardekar won. He claimed that later he worked for BJP during 2012 and 2017 polls.
Hodarkar was a BJP supporter till differences surfaced between him and Power Minister Nilesh Cabral when the former was declared elected Curchorem-Cacora chairperson defeating Vishwas Sawant, who was also the president of Curchorem BJP Mandal, in April this year.
Within an hour after his election, Hodarkar had to face no-trust motion tabled by 10 councillors backed by Cabral. But the same was not considered by the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) as the meeting proceedings were not received by his office.
Later, Hodarkar was ousted in another no-confidence motion by 9-6 votes.
There are also reports that Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) former mayor Tony Rodrigues and a prominent businessman from Panjim will join the Congress next week.
But Rodrigues told Herald that he joining the Congress is just a rumour.
“Someone from Taleigao also asked me whether I am joining Congress. I have no plans”, he said citing family reasons.
