CCP bans use of plastic items at Gokul Ashtami fair

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has banned use of plastic related products during the annual Gokul Ashtami cum Ganesh Chaturthi fair starting from Friday.
Corporation of the City of Panaji has allowed total 220 stalls for the fair which will come up along the promenade from ferry wharf to Mahaveer Garden.
Speaking to media persons on Thursday, mayor Uday Madkaikar said the corporation had received over 700 applications for stalls; however, the standing committee allowed only 220.
“All these stalls are given to locals, having voter identity cards from Goa,” he said.
The stalls include that of furniture, traditional kitchen items, wooden items, clothes, etc.
Mayor said the stall owners are strictly warned against use of plastic and its related items during the fair. “We have asked them to go eco-friendly. Any violation will be dealt seriously,” he warned.
Madkaikar said to ensure cleanliness at the site, bins for wet and dry waste would be kept and bio-toilets would be installed.
Responding to a question, Madkaikar said that during the upcoming council meeting, he would put up proposal not to renew trade licences of the offshore casinos, which are slated to expire in March, 2020.
“I am firm on the decision that the trade licences should not be renewed; but the final decision will be taken by the council during the meeting,” he added.
