PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Friday decided to legalise 92 moveable handcarts in Panjim while putting a restriction on issue of more licenses.
The categories which have been legalised are bhelpuri, fruits, ice cream and cold drinks, vada pao and rass omelete. However, CCP has said that no moveable handcarts of tender coconut and sugarcane will be allowed in the city.
The decision was taken at the council meeting on Friday chaired by Mayor Surendra Furtado and attended by other councilors and Commissioner Dipak Desai.
Speaking to the media, Furtado said, “We had appointed a committee headed by Market Committee Chairman Uday Madkaikar along with a few corporators and ATO and a report was presented to the Mayor and Commissioner whereby 92 handcarts were there and the corporation should decide whether this 92 handcarts should be legalised or not. After discussing it was decided that 92 handcarts will be finalised.”
He added, “No extra handcarts will be seen in Panjim. There will be no handcarts of sugarcane and tender coconuts and if we see any of these I will instruct the Commissioner to go and take the JCB and crush it there and there.”
He further said that CCP has appointed a Vending Committee as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court and that they will decide on the location.
“We have made a nameplate which will be fixed on the handcart and we will send photographs along with other description of the category in which the handcart falls along with details of the person,” he added.
CCP also resolved not to give road digging permission until October to Goa Natural Gas Pvt Limited for laying city gas distribution (CGD) network in view of the monsoon.
“As far as digging is concerned and when the file came to me I said no digging till October and today I got this on the agenda and one of the corporators said he wants to have a plan of the city so we decided to wait until the plan comes and permission will be decided later,” he added.
