PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji demolished an illegal room built on the terrace of Sushila building, in the heart of the city, by unknown persons, which may have been used for illegal activities.
Officials say that the structure was demolished after an inquiry was conducted based on a complaint from one of the neighbours. Sources say that there were used condoms as well as other such assorted items found dumped in the neighbour’s compound, leading some to presume that this was used for some prostitution/massage racket.
There was no response to the show cause and two inspections failed to find any occupants staying in the room, officials said.
After an inspection, report was submitted and though efforts were made to find the owners or any interested parties, nobody came forward even though notices were pasted on the door as well on the building entrance. After a reasonable time, the demolition notice was pasted on the door of the structure as well as the building. But nobody came forward.
Officials say that before the elections a demolition squad was requisitioned from the deputy collector, but the demolitions could not be carried out because of the code of conduct in force then. After the elections too, the squad was requisitioned, but for some unforeseen reason the demolition could not be carried out.
This was the third time that it was requisitioned and finally the demolition was carried out.
