PANJIM: Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has again begun a drive against handcarts illegally occupying space in the city. On Wednesday, CCP confiscated 11 handcarts which had been stationed along 18 June Road.
CCP Commissioner Dipak Desai said there were several complaints filed against the illegal occupancy of footpath and street space by the handcarts. “They are stationed in a place for several years. I have sent my staff several times to remove them but they try to create law and order problem by opposing the staff,” he added.
He said that CCP has issued licenses to the handcarts and there is no harm in halting at a particular spot, however, occupying space is illegal. “I have told them you can station your handcarts here every day but take back the carts when you go home at night. But they do not adhere to the orders and hence we have to act against all illegalities,” he stated.
He added that CCP would issue fresh licenses to the 72 handcarts which have been registered with the corporation.
Last week Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado had written to the Commissioner to act against illegal handcarts causing harassment to pedestrians and vehicles in the capital city.
