CCP hunting for places to build mini wet garbage plants

PANJIM: It’s been five days since the trucks carrying waste from Panjim have not been accepted at the Saligao waste treatment plant. Against this backdrop, Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) is now searching for places to build three mini garbage treatment plants in the city.
This call was taken as a fall out of the recent tussle between Saligao and Panjim, where the capital city is suffering with rising garbage woes.  The collected waste has been kept at the garbage segregation sites in Panjim.
Once CCP has identified the places where they can establish the mini garbage treatment plants, they will treat the wet garbage generated from the city, which is currently a burden on the corporation.
These plants will treat around two to five tonnes of garbage every day.  The plant will be built depending on the size of the available area.
However, space constraints is hampering CCP’s search and they are also open to using private land, if any such land owners are willing to come forward and assist CCP.
Another reason for this push, is the fact that the Bainguinim garbage treatment has not moved forward for various reasons. CCP officials stated that once that plant is operation, the need to send trucks to other garbage treatment plants as the plant will not only treat the waste of Tiswadi.
However, until that time, CCP is looking at starting the smaller plants in the city.
“We are looking for land in different areas in the city to start small garbage treatment plants like 2 tonnes, 5 tonnes to treat our own wet garbage. Five days have passed since we have been requesting that our garbage is transported to the Saligao plant but no one is ready to give a written assurance to us. So, we have decided that we will not depend on others in the future and we will treat our garbage in this manner,” said Panjim Mayor Uday Madkaikar.
He also rejected speculation that they are targeting the national theatre area for the treatment plant and added that the theatre matter is in the courts and that they cannot use that place.
