CCP may demolish ‘unsafe’ portion of Panjim market housing fish and meat vendors

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) is considering demolishing the “unsafe” building that houses fish and meat vendors in Panjim market and constructing a new one as part of the construction of much delayed third phase of the Panjim municipal market.

Speaking to O Heraldo, CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate said, “We have received the stability report and it states that the building is unsafe. We want to take this up under the third phase of the Panjim Municipal Market. We will first discuss in the Council meeting and decide the future course of action.”

He said that the CCP will follow due procedures while taking up the demolition of the said building.

Monserrate, along with Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Naik, Councillor Bento Lorena who is the chairman of the CCP’s market committee and CCP officials inspected the said building and the peripheral of the new Municipal market complex on Tuesday morning.

The CCP Mayor said that the cleanliness in the market was not satisfactory and added that the supervisors will be taken to task if they fail in their duties and responsibilities entrusted to them.

“The third phase of the Panjim market project has been long pending due to various reasons. The Mayor has decided now to expedite for which he has brought the funds,” Bento Lorena said.

He further said that the CCP will take up the work to replace the roofs of the shops in the periphery of the new Municipal market complex before the onset of the monsoon.

During inspection, many vendors who had encroached upon the pedestrian space were told to immediately remove it to clear the way for pedestrians.

Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Naik informed that the CCP has initiated the process for hiring labourers for a period of five months whose services will be used for pre-monsoon works and during the monsoon to attend emergency duties under disaster management.
