PANJIM: The capital city is reeling under the garbage menace, with no solution yet for its treatment. Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Uday Madkaikar has once again pitched for setting up Bainguinim plant.
The garbage woes have escalated as the Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMP) at Saligao will no longer treat the capital’s waste. CCP Commissioner Shashank Tripathi had claimed that notices to large residential complexes and hotels were issued under administrative compulsions upon the directives of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to comply with the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016.
However, the Mayor is of the opinion that without proper infrastructure, implementation of the rules is just impossible. He informed that the setting up of garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim is pending for more than a decade now.
“It is now almost two years that the CCP handed over the 1.71 lakh square metres of land to the government in September 2017. Government had then said that the plant would come up in six months. Why has not the government taken any steps in this direction?” he questioned.
