PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has objected to a commercial hoarding on a pontoon, anchored in River Mandovi, claiming it is in violation of High Court directives.
CCP Commissioner Deepak Desai in a letter to Captain of Ports (CoP) has directed it to immediately withdraw the licence granted for the installation of the hoarding on the pontoon.
As per the communication, there is an advertisement hoarding (home décor) on a pontoon, anchored in River Mandovi, abutting the promenade opposite Mermaid Garden, and permission has been granted by CoP. “It is specifically pointed out this portion where the hoarding in housed is illegal. The party concerned claims immunity of CCP licence by taking shelter of CoP permission,” Desai said.
The Commissioner stated that hoarding is in defiance of High Court in suo-moto Writ Petition 2007 and also in contravention of provisions of Defacement of Public Property Act 1988. “Moreover, it will set a dirty precedent,” he stated.
Desai has directed CoP to either withdraw the permission granted to install the hoarding or shift the pontoon in the middle of the river.
