CCP penalises real estate firm for dumping debris on public road

Rs 1 lakh penalty imposed; directed to clear the road ‘immediately’, seeks for compliance report

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh on a real estate company for ‘illegally’ occupying a subsidiary public road running parallel to the main road opposite Krishnadas Shama State Central Library at Patto-Panjim.

The Corporation has asked the firm executing a mega project in the vicinity to clear the road ‘immediately’.

“On June 28, the CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira dispatched a letter to the real estate company directing to remove all the material debris and clear the subsidiary public road and has also sought a compliance report. Further, a fine of Rs one lakh have been imposed on the company for illegally occupying the service road and causing obstruction in the locality,” a senior official said.

Sources in the CCP informed that the particular company had been initially granted permission to use the said subsidiary road and it had submitted an application in May 2023 for a further period of four months. However, the CCP rejected the application as the company failed to justify the need for the use of the service road.

It is pertinent to note that the real estate company has dumped two-storey cabins, heavy machinery including cranes, construction materials etc along the subsidiary road thereby blocking the access to the public.

The Central Library visitors were using the subsidiary road for parking their vehicles and also driving license tests were being conducted by the Transport Department on the same road. Councillors had raised the issue during the CCP meeting in January and in May earlier this year where CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate on both occasions assured to get the construction materials and machinery cleared from the road.
