PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has now decided to impose parking fees on government vehicles in the City. The CCP will move a note to North Goa District Collector to make necessary amendments to its notification so as to charge pay parking fees to the government vehicles.
Corporation of the City of Panaji has also demanded that the pay parking be made applicable for 24 hours rather than the existing format from 9 am to 9pm.
The Office of the District Magistrate, North Goa had in August notified five pay parking areas in Panjim. The roads including 18th June Road commencing from Sunrise Hotel up to BSNL Office near Church Square, Rua Cunha Rivera Road from A B Naique Square (commerce point to Hotel Vinanti) and all along Garcia de Orta garden on all four sides, Dr A B Road commencing from Corporation Bank at Church Square up to opposite Rayu Chambers, Joao Castro Road from Down The Road pub to behind old Secretariat and Jack Sequeira Road from Miramar Circle up to first gate of Sharada Mandir School on both sides of the road; have been earmarked as pay parking zones for four-wheelers only.
Mayor Uday Madkaikar said that the Corporation will write to North Collector requesting to make necessary amendments to its earlier notification so as to impose pay parking fees on government vehicles too. “There are so many government offices along 18th June Road. Near Junta House, which has maximum government offices, you see government vehicles parked for entire day. We need to charge them too, as they occupy cum block parking space,” he said.
Madkaikar said pay parking cannot just be for 12 hours, as there are so many tourist and casino vehicles parked on the road from late night till early morning.
Collector had directed Corporation of the City of Panaji to make necessary arrangements to construct/erect all the required signboards at the places indicated as pay parking and report compliance by September 16, 2019 failing which pay parking will not commence. However, Corporation of the City of Panaji has failed to do so till now.
Mayor said that Corporation of the City of Panaji will invite bids for pay parking this week.
Double parking, parking on footpaths, parking on zebra crossing, parking at the entrance of any residential building having parking facilities are also banned.
