PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Thursday passed a slew of resolutions including introduction of pay parking pass system to city residents, seeking Taleigao panchayat permission to dump wet waste from the city in their area and imposing garbage tax on residential government premises within its jurisdiction.
During the ordinary meeting chaired by Mayor Surendra Furtado, the council also sought action against the illegal sopo collection from municipal market occupants by an unknown person.
The council members noted that while signing pay parking agreement with contractor Straight Deal Services, the condition in regard to introduction of pass system to residents was not added and hence residents are forced to pay parking fees.
“Former commissioner had assured that a pass system will be introduced wherein the actual owner of the house would be provided with two passes – for a two-wheeler and a four-wheeler. However, the same was not included in the agreement,” Furtado told the House.
The House was also informed that the contractor, who was supposed to pay Rs 5.23 lakh to CCP per month, has deposited just Rs 2 lakh since May. “The contractor has communicated to CCP that he can pay only Rs 2 lakh per month,” Commissioner Deepak Desai informed the council.
Accordingly, the council resolved to grant the contractor a rebate, wherein he can pay Rs 2.50 lakh per month and replace the balance amount with a pass system to the residents.
In yet another decision, the council resolved to approach Taleigao panchayat with a request to allow dumping of wet waste from the city and from offshore casino vessels within their jurisdiction. The decision was taken after former Mayor and councillor Shubham Chodankar objected to dumping of wet waste collected from casino vessels at Patto treatment plant.
The council also decided to impose garbage collection fees cum tax on residents of government colonies and provide dust bins for collection of wet and dry waste.
In yet another decision, CCP will impose a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the mobile company and Rs 2 lakh on the land owner found installing mobile towers without permission. It was also decided to initiate the process to recover Rs 1.20 crore from Reliance Pvt Ltd for laying fiber optics in the city. “If the company fails to pay the pending dues, then the corporation will remove the entire cable,” the council decided.
