CCP to launch ‘Shop With Your Waste’ campaign

Citizens will be provided essentials in exchange of dry waste

PANJIM: In an innovative scheme, the Corporation of The City of Panjim will launch “Shop With Your Waste” (SWYW) campaign from October 2, under which the citizens will be provided essentials in exchange of dry waste.

The scheme is being introduced to mark the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and the sixth year of Swacch Bharat Mission.

“The campaign is technically supported under the ‘Waste NAMA’ project being implemented by GIZ India – a German Government Development Corporation and TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute)  – a national  think tank,” CCP Commissioner Sanjith Rodrigues said in a statement issued.

Rodrigues said that the initiative seeks to motivate the residents of Panjim to recycle dry waste, through a bartering system, and will be driven with the support of the shops and commercial establishments based in the city.

“Under this  campaign, the city residents are expected to bring in recyclable dry waste  such as  milk pouches (cleaned and dried), cardboard (flattened and dry), and, PET bottles (crushed and dry) and in  exchange take away daily essentials like bread, milk, eggs, rice, pulses etc. from the shops who become a part of the campaign,” he said.

Rodrigues said that this unique model is being launched by CCP to inhibit a sense of value for waste among its citizens and to provide a way to incentivise its citizens who have been segregating their waste diligently since years.

“The campaign also strives to improve the socio-economic fabric of the city by providing new opportunities to existing entrepreneurs and waste workers,” he added. The Commissioner said that the campaign is open to only shopkeepers who are based in the city.
