CCP tows away junk vehicles to decongest city streets

PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Friday began towing away nearly 280 junk vehicles, which were abandoned, to decongest the city streets.

The six-month long notice issued to make claim for the vehicle, by the North Collector, ended on March 18. A total 280 junk vehicles, including two-wheelers, three and four-wheelers were identified.

Speaking to Herald, Mayor Uday Madkaikar said that total 110 two-wheelers and 30 four-wheelers have been towed away so far.

“By Saturday, all the vehicles would be towed and shifted to Campal Parade ground,” he said.

Madkaikar said that Corporation will initiate process to auction these vehicles, by issuing a notice, next week.

“We had given six months time for the vehicle owners to make claim and take their vehicles. But since, no one approached, we are now going ahead with the auction,” he said.

The Mayor said that these vehicles, majority of which are two-wheelers, are occupying maximum parking space in the city.

Large chunk of abandoned vehicles can be seen near Panjim Police Station, EDC-Patto Plaza, market area and in many lanes.
