PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has expressed its willingness to dump the city waste for treatment at the newly commissioned Solid Waste Treatment Plant (SWTP) at Saligao.
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, City Mayor Surendra Furtado said that if government is ready to consider allowing Panjim waste to be treated at the Saligao plant, Corporation of the City of Panaji will collect and transport the waste for treatment at the site.
“We are ready to send our garbage there for treatment let government consider us. Government has been saying that the plant is meant only to treat waste from North coastal belt,” Furtado said responding to a question whether Corporation of the City of Panaji will write to government to allow them to dump their waste at Saligao plant.
Mayor said that even after repeated demands government has failed to provide a permanent dumping site for the Corporation. “As a result, we are forced to dump at Campal, Patto and other places,” he said.
Furtado has now moved a note to Commissioner Deepak Dessai asking him to approach government with a fresh proposal to provide a garbage dumping site.
“In order to keep the city clean and to avoid any epidemic, the waste and debris is required to be removed and dumped in an isolated place,” he has said in his note.
He said that the dumping sites which were available in the CCP area are full and now there is no place to dump the waste.
