PANJIM: Regardless of the fact that the State capital does not have a dumping site for garbage disposal, Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Saturday organised a cleanliness drive at Altinho.
While local residents asked Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado about a dumping site for dry waste, especially garden waste, the Mayor responded with helplessness at the lack of help from the State government in resolving the issue.
Residents though appreciated the fact that the CCP’s garbage collection of segregated waste is prompt. However, they complained about non-lifting of leaf litter and garden waste for several months.
Expressing anguish at the state of affairs, a lady residing near Nirmala Institute said, “For several months garden waste has been lying here without being lifted. There are several trees here and there is lot of leaf litter which is generated. It is being accumulated and nobody is making any efforts to lift it.”
Responding to the residents Furtado assured that dry waste would be cleared within seven days. He, however, cautioned that the corporation would be able to do that only if the government steps in and provides CCP a dry waste dumping site.
He said, “CCP is being blamed for not lifting garbage. Ironically, CCP has written to the government several times asking to provide a dumping site.”
