PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji’s (CCP) collection, segregation and disposal system adopted for solid waste management has won an award.
The award for excellence in solid waste management was given at the hands of Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu after a nation-wide survey conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment New Delhi. Panjim stood 16th amongst 72 cities.
“The garbage collection, segregation and disposal system adopted by the Corporation is termed as one of the best by the Ministry,” CCP commissioner Deepak Dessai told Herald.
CCP was the first corporation that launched the door-to-door garbage collection system in the State, wherein segregated waste in the form of dry and wet is collected from residential and commercial units. The only failure is on the part of dumping and treatment front.
The corporation lacks a proper garbage dumping facility. The Bainguinim treatment plant, proposed in 2009, is yet to take shape while the facility behind Heera petrol pump has not commenced.
In the absence of a proper dumping and treatment facility, CCP is forced to dispose of city waste at the Patto treatment plant, which is in bad condition causing air pollution and leading to other environment hazards.
