CCTV surveillance proves successful in nabbing litterbugs in Chinchinim

MARGAO: The recent deployment of CCTV surveillance to monitor ‘black spots’ along the roadside where people illegally dispose of garbage has yielded successful results. Last month, the Chinchinim-Deussua village panchayat installed a CCTV surveillance system to combat the problem of miscreants dumping garbage in public areas. The system has already proven effective, capturing several violators in the act, who were subsequently fined by the panchayat, with penalties reaching up to Rs 5,000.

In various villages across Salcete taluka, miscreants tend to dump garbage under the cover of night, taking advantage of poor roadside illumination.

While some communities, such as Benaulim village, have proactive residents who voluntarily monitor these black spots and get violators to clean up their mess, most panchayats have erected warning signs against garbage dumping. However, these signs have not been entirely effective in curbing the issue.

Additionally, the panchayats have faced recurring challenges, as they regularly clear waste from these locations only to find new heaps of garbage deposited at the same sites the very next day.

Villagers have also called on the Electricity Department to address the issue by installing streetlights near these black spots, believing that improved illumination will act as a deterrent.

The ongoing problem of black spots has left residents frustrated due to the associated challenges, including foul stench and the attraction of stray animals to these dumping sites.
