CEC evades questions on reliability of EVMs

Chief Election Commissioner of India Dr S Y Quraishi today evaded queries on whether the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) could be tampered or not but suggested that the machines could be improved.
There has been a debate on the reliability of EVMs with Opposition Parties questioning their reliability. However, addressing a press conference here, Quraishi reposed faith in the EVM technology, which he said had stood the test of time since it was first introduced in 1982.
“The procedure of EVM usage was vetted both technologically and administratively to keep out malpractices or manipulation consistently over a period of time,” he said adding “The EVM technology has improved considerably ever since it was first introduced in 1982.”
“We have elaborate procedures and a technical experts committee outside the commission (ECI), which authorises any changes or improvements which are to be made,” said Quraishi.
“The machines have gone under a lot of improvement and we try to counter, prevent or anticipate any malpractice in advance,” he said.
The BJP has already called for an all-party meeting to discuss the efficacy of EVMs in elections, after a Hyderabad-based researcher Hari Prasad triggered a controversy by claiming that EVMs could be tampered with.
