While the officials stated that their workers will not damage the cemetery during double tracking work, committee members stated that railway workers could do their duties peacefully.

Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, Vasco MLA Daji Salkar and Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar had taken the initiative to resolve the issue.

The railway track and the cemetery are a few meters away from the Maimollem pond and since the Railways had undertaken the work of double tracking, they were keen on acquiring 10 meters of land.

However, the cemetery committee had expressed fear that the age old structure would be damaged. Godinho then called a joint meeting of the MLAs, railway officials and the cemetery committee members and both parties arrived  at a consensus.

“The matter was pending for quite some time and now both the sides have agreed upon the proposal. The Railways will carry out their work by demarcating their boundary which will not put the cemetery’s existence into danger. We want to balance development and people’s welfare.
