PANJIM: In a major boost to Goa Tourism, the Ministry of Shipping intends to boost Aguada lighthouse as a tourist destination. The development comes months after the State government, in a separate project, took up the Rs 25.8-crore project to restore and revive the history and heritage of the vacated Central Jail, Aguada.
“Centre’s proposal to develop the lighthouse will add to its charm as Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) is already on the job to transform the oldest jail for tourist attraction,” a senior tourism official, monitoring tourism-related development activities, told Herald.
The Portuguese-built lighthouse, the oldest in Asia, has been featured in a number of movies. The department hopes to get more offers from filmmakers to shoot at the location.
“We are ready to offer all the required help to the Centre. Once the lighthouse and Aguada jail are developed as tourist attractions, we are certain that the location will be a popular hub among tourists and the film industry,” he added.
