CEO fighting lone battle to clear garbage

The waste is dumped in the courtyard of the CMC

The ‘Swatch Bharat Abhiyan’ movement in Canacona was taken up with earnest zeal by the Deputy Collector cum Chief officer Chandrakant Shetkar but it is learnt that he is fighting a lone battle.
He has been holding cleanliness drive all over the taluka and also educating students on the care hygiene and cleanliness.
Canacona is a hub of tourist activity. Local and foreign tourists visit this place but show scant respect towards the protection of the environment.
The garbage that is collected is dumped in the courtyard of the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) and people visiting the CMC office have to bear the nauseating smell.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is a helpless man and sources say that there is no co-operation given to him by the people and the elected representatives.
When contacted, the CEO said he has called for a meeting to discuss the garbage menace.
“The garbage treatment at Dumane was damaged in an accidental fire. The plant requires emergency repairs as the machinery was destroyed in the inferno,” the CEO informed.
Garbage is strewn all along the road side and also in the open fields behind the CMC market. The waste is of discarded chicken meat, fish bones, rotten fruits, vegetables, plastics and other materials. The NGT is turning a blind eye to his menace despite being funded by the government.
The CEO feels that every citizen should co-operate to solve the garbage issue and keep their houses and surrounding clean to make ‘Swatch Bharat Abhiyan’ in Canacona a success.
