CEO seeks financial statements of parties

PANJIM: The Chief Electoral Office (CEO) has written to all non-recognised political parties to submit their annual financial statements within a month.

In line with the Election Commission of India (ECI) directing recognised parties to submit their financial accounts, the CEO has asked non-registered parties to provide details to ascertain the source of income.
The ECI has also issued guidelines with regards to expenditure incurred by candidates or political parties, which is fixed at Rs 20 lakh. “The ECI has issued guidelines with regards to expenditure incurred by 
the contesting candidate or the political party has to be duly monitored because if they cross the limits as prescribed by the ECI, the contesting candidate can be disqualified,” the statement says.
“ As of now as per the Rule 90 of the Conduct of Election Rules as amended in 2014 the contesting candidate in the State of Goa should not exceed the limit of Rs 20,00,000,” it added.
In order to have uniform rates of various items that could be used by the contesting candidate during the ensuing elections, the office of the Collector and District Elections Officer, South Goa District held a meeting in December and after consultations arrived at the rates of various items.
The State will be going to the polls in mid-February. The model code of conduct is expected to come into force next week.
