An abortive attempt was made to snatch the gold chain of a college girl in the port town on Friday at about 9.30 am.
According to reports, the incident occurred near the railway bridge, Driver Hill-Vasco when a second year Commerce student from Driver Hill was proceeding towards her college.
As she was on her way, an unknown youth attempted to snatch her gold chain, but could not succeed as the girl raised an alarm and the miscreant fled from the scene.
The panic-stricken girl approached the nearby Reserve Railway Police Force, who directed her to approach Vasco police.
Acting swiftly, Vasco police sent two constables in civil dress along with the girl, but could not trace the miscreant.
Acknowledging a police complaint filed by the girl, Vasco police informed that earlier such incidents have been reported at the same site.
There have been reports that in the last 15 days, several cases of daylight thefts have been reported in the port town.
About three people have been the victims of such thefts, losing their valuables from the parked scooters outside Chicalim Sports Complex. One victim included the reporter of a Marathi daily, who lost his digital camera and wallet.
It may be recalled that in 2008 about 58 cases of thefts were reported in Mormugao taluka, including 16 auto-theft cases out of which 28 cases have been detected including six auto-theft cases.
