PONDA: Women beware of motorcycle riders seeking address or direction! They could snatch your chain or mangalsutra as has happened to three women in the last few days.
In the first incident, two motorcycle borne culprits snatched the mangalsutra of a woman at Kavlem on Saturday. The culprits reportedly came on a motorcycle, stopped by the victim woman at a residential area on the pretext of seeking an address, and snatched her mangalsutra.
The fact that the offence was committed in a residential area has shocked the locals.
Similarly, motorcycle borne culprits snatched the chain of a woman at Durbahat, on Saturday.
In the third incident that occurred a couple of days ago, when a Farmagudi woman and her friend were walking towards the underpass at Sun Hotel in Ponda, two men came on a motorcycle, stopped by them to ask for an address, and snatched the mangalsutra of the woman.
The offences of chain snatching have been committed despite the Ponda police cracking seven such cases by arresting four accused and recovering chains/mangalsutras valued at Rs 5 lakh.
Intelligence was developed during the interrogation of one Nizzamudin Zalekar who was arrested on August 28 in a drug case. Zalekar revealed that he was also involved in chain snatching and that three others were his accomplices.
