With a new Chief Officer Naveen S L, IAS, taking over at the Margao Municipal Council, the issue of encroachments in the two municipal markets – Gandhi Market and New Market – has come to the fore again. The civic body has sent clear signals to the market traders in the two markets to either remove the encroachments voluntarily or brace up for a full-fledged anti-encroachment drive. Naveen is believed to have already taken a round of the two markets to personally check the ground reality before issuing directions to the market inspectors to set in motion the process to crack a whip on the erring traders. GUILHERME ALMEIDA spoke to the leader of Gandhi Market Vendors Association Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar and to Vinod Shirodkar, the president of Margao New Market Traders Association on the issue of encroachments and their plan of action vis-à-vis the anti-encroachment drive.
