Chandel water treatment plant inadequate for Pernem Taluka

PERNEM: Pernem locals have expressed grave discontent over government bringing projects in the taluka before arranging water facilities for the same.

They have claimed that the water from Chandel water treatment plant is being diverted to the upcoming projects which is causing insufficient supply of water to the locals.

The new airport at Mopa, AYUSH Hospital at Dhargal and the upcoming Electronic City project at Tuem were implemented without planning their need for water. This has evidently put stress on the Chandel water treatment plant, which has the capacity of 15 MLD.

Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar and Mandrem MLA Jeet Arolkar had recently met with the concerned authorities and had directed them to regularise the water supply. However, since the augmentation of the Chandel plant is yet to begin, there are difficulties in supplying enough water to the locals with its current limited capacity.

“The government has not taken the proper direction for the augmentation of the Chandel Water Treatment Plant which will increase its capacity from 15 MLD to 30 MLD. The officials need to check and ensure the consistent supply of water,” said Tuem Village Panchayat former sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch Nilesh Kandolkar.

Chandel water treatment plant provides water to all 20 panchayats in Pernem as well as the municipal area which accounts to 18,981 tap connections.
