MARGAO, MARCH 25
Agitated residents of Chandor on Wednesday afternoon staged a rasta roko at Cota by blocking plying of heavy trucks in the area.
What sparked trouble and forced the residents to take to the streets is a tipper truck that turned turtle near the sharp turn.
As news of the accident spread in the locality, the residents assembled at the site and blocked heavy traffic from plying.
A local resident Menino Gomes told Herald that accidents have been taking place at the dangerous turn almost every day, but the authorities have failed to take action against the trucks plying on the no entry zone.
He further said the authorities should take immediate steps to erect speed breakers on the road.
PSI Kapil Nayak of Maina Curtorim police station, who rushed to the spot, informed that the police has begun challaning the trucks for violating the traffic rules. He said it was illegal for the trucks to ply through the no entry zone.
Another residents maintained that the road is so narrow that it cannot withstand the heavy traffic and called for diversion of the heavy trucks.
The residents blamed the truck drivers for removing the no entry sign board and demanded that the police deploy a constable to regular traffic on the road.
Only recently, villagers at the Sunday gram sabha had resolved to ask for a ban on plying of heavy traffic, including trucks, through the village.
