MARGAO: A letter written by Maina Curtorim Police Inspector Shivram Vaigankar to the Chandor Cavorim Sarpanch has stirred a hornet’s nest with the villagers questioning the logic to have the Maina Curtorim Police Station in their village when actually the government has already acquired land for the station.
Vide letter dated August 7, 2020 PI Vaigankar while pointing out that the Maina Curtorim Police Station is presently housed in the South Goa District Police Headquarters stressed the need to have the police station functioning within its jurisdiction.
The PI asked the sarpanch to identify any land or house that is not being used to be utilised to house the Maina Curtorim Police Station in the village where there exists a police outpost that is headed by a Head Constable and not even a police sub inspector.
The police inspector asking for land for a police station in Chandor is quite ironic given the fact that the government has already acquired 9,000 sq mts of land at Raia close to Sonsodo for the purpose of constructing the Maina Curtorim Police Station there. Now that the government has taken up the construction of premises for Quepem Police Station, Maina Curtorim Police Station construction is to be taken up next disclosed senior police officials.
Besides, the Maina Curtorim Police Station is currently in the process of being shifted to the government school premises at Manora in Raia which is under the police station’s jurisdiction.
President of Chandor Club Domnick Mendes questioned the need to acquire additional land for setting up a police station in Chandor.
He also wondered as what is the crime rate in the village to justify for setting up a police station.
However, PI Shivram said, “They are proposing to shift the police outpost from its existing premises close to the old Chandor Railway Station as that place is not sufficient. He had no answer when it was pointed out that the letter clearly mentioned the police station and not a police outpost.
Chandor Cavorim Sarpanch Edward D’Silva while admitting that he was not aware of the land acquired for the police station at Raia said he had asked his panchayat members to identify land or premises as requested by the police inspector.
