Change the DP, loot the target

Online scamster enjoys freedom to con people as helpless police stare at Cyber Crime Dept

PANJIM:  Chaitanya is a four-wheeler mechanic, runs a workshop to earn his living, and at times goes out of the way to solve his customers queries, to earn their satisfaction.

But, since he lost his hard-earned money to a scamster, pretending to be his relative, through online payment, he is not only annoyed but aggravated. A police complaint has not yielded anything. Instead, the scamster continues to change his WhatsApp profile picture (DP) and con his targets.

Chaitanya filed his complaint at Vasco Police Station on May 15, the same day he lost his money. The complaint says, he received a WhatsApp message, from the 7099495151 number, posing to be his close relative, as the profile picture suggested. The ‘relative’ claimed that he is in trouble and needs cash to overcome his problem. Since he is not able to transfer money from his account, Chaitanya was asked to transfer money to ‘relatives’ friend’s account. Without a second thought, Chaitanya transferred the demanded amount. When there was another request to transfer more money, Chaitanya asked about the exact problem his ‘relative’ was facing. Then came the shocking reply. You are conned. Chaitanya immediately ended the conversation suggesting the ‘relative’ not to rob people’s hard earned money.

At the time of filing the complaint, the police had off the record suggested thinnest chances of recovering the money.

Chaitanya is infuriated, as he has been seeing the DP of conman frequently changed during the last 20-25 days. It is evident that the conman is all out searching and scamming his targets, while the police point fingers at the Cyber Crime Department.

Cracking this case is the only affirmative answer the State can give to Chaitanya.
