HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, MAY 3
The trial in the rape of an Australian woman in Canacona is set to begin from Wednesday and is likely to be expedited fast as the victim has to leave the country.
The Crime Branch on Monday filed a 115-page chargesheet in the JMFC Court in Canacona just 13 days after it took over the investigation. This was one of the fastest chargesheets filed and we are hoping the court will give its verdict soon, PI Sunita Sawant said
PI Sawant said they have asked the court to expedite the trial fast because the victim has to leave the country. We have examined 27 witnesses in the case and the accused, a Nigerian, has been framed under charges of confinement (Sec 342) and rape (376) under the Indian Penal Code, she mentioned.
She said in the meanwhile the vaginal swabs of the victim have been sent for expert opinion and they expected to get the report fast.
Police had arrested the 28-year-old Nigerian Obi Okaroafor on April 18 after the victim complained she was raped by the man on April 17 night at Palolem beach after spiking her drinks.
