Chicalim fatal accident: Police arrest owner of car driven by minor

VASCO: The Vasco police on Wednesday arrested Tahir Khan (27) from Mapusa, whose vehicle, while being driven by a minor, caused a fatal accident that left a woman dead. Two-wheeler rider Reena Gonsalves was killed in the crash at Chicalim last week.

The accident had occurred when the minor, who was driving a Maruti Ertiga vehicle, drove on the wrong side and struck Gonsalves, and then dragged her and her pillion rider across a few metres on the road, before hitting a roadside Cross. Eyewitnesses said the occupants of the car were under the influence of alcohol.

Gonsalves succumbed to her injuries at the Sub District Hospital at Chicalim. The pillion rider, identified as her nephew Valiant Fernandes was shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, for treatment of his injuries.

Vasco PI Kapil Nayak said that after the accident, the car owner Khan had gone underground and was planning to abscond, but was apprehended at a location in South Goa, thanks to intelligence inputs. He said that Khan had given his vehicle on rent to the minor, who was driving the vehicle on the fateful day.

The minor boy has been remanded in Apna Ghar, Merces. The Vasco police have registered a case against Tahir Khan under Section 304 of the IPC and Section 180 and 199-A(2) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Further investigations are on, said PI Nayak.
