The panchayat action comes following a complaint by a villager alleging land filling.
According to Chicalim Sarpanch Neelima Naik, an inspection of illegal land filling site was carried out by the panchayat members on Friday and the members were shocked to find that rampant land filling activity was going on at the site.
“The site where illegal land filling activity has been going on is located behind Assoi-Dongri residential. We were shocked and surprised to note that without taking any permission from any competent authority including the panchayat, the party concerned has filled land and has developed plots,” Naik informed.
“What is more serious is that some of the plots have already been sold and people have started constructing compound wall around the plot purchased by them,” she said.
According to Neelima Naik, the depth of the land filling is around 15 meters, as such, she said, the panchayat has decided to issue stop work cum show cause notice to the party immediately.
“There is fear that if heavy rains lash the village, the portion of land which has been filled up with rubbles and mud could result in land slide posing high risk to the residents living below the hill,” she told.
Panch Rahul Fernandes said that according to the panchayat records the area which has been illegally filled falls under green and orchid land.
“Now we have also decided to follow the procedure and break all the compound walls constructed illegally. Similarly, we would also write to Deputy Collector Mormugao complaining about the land filling and seeking appropriate action against the party,” he added.
