PORVORIM: The new market complex at Mapusa was inaugurated over three months back, but the chicken and meat vendors are yet to shift their business activities to a new place despite being served notices by Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had inaugurated the new market complex on January 26. The fish vendors have already moved in the new market premises. MMC had made provision for chicken, meat and beef vendors on the first floor of the complex.
Three months have passed but the chicken and meat vendors are yet to shift to the new premises.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari said MMC had had delivered possession letters to 28 chicken and meat vendors on March 24 requesting them to surrender the old stalls and take possession of stalls in the new premises.
“They were directed to lock their old stalls and hand over the keys to MMC before taking possession of the new stalls. It has been the experience of MMC that shopkeepers or vendors do not hand over the keys of the old shops/premises to MMC even after shifting to new premises,” said Falari.
“MMC has made it mandatory for the chicken and meat vendors to hand over the keys of the existing stalls to MMC, failing which they will not be given possession of the stalls in the new building,” warned Falari.
“MMC proposes to demolish the existing building, where chicken and beef vendors are located and utilize the space for parking purpose,” informed Falari.
