MARGAO: In the aftermath of Sonsoddo mess, Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar has assured stringent action against those found responsible for the leachate flowing onto the roads. Simultaneously, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco warned the Margao civic body that trucks carrying garbage will face blockades if these issues are not addressed.
On Wednesday, the MMC CO Sankhwalkar, Curtorim MLA, MMC councillors Camilo Barreto, Sadanand Naik, and others, visited the dump site to assess the situation. The CO indirectly attributed the leak to a mistake or negligence.
Responding to allegations that no MMC officials and workers were present during the incident, Sankhwalkar clarified that municipal workers helped blocking the flow of waste water, with MMC officials overseeing the operations from a distance to avoid tension with irate locals.
Providing an overview of ongoing works at the Sonsoddo dump yard Sankhwalkar shared details of waste segregation efforts, highlighting that 35 tonnes of wet waste and 15 tonnes of dry waste are generated within the civic body’s jurisdiction. Wet waste is sent to the Cacora waste treatment plant after door-to-door collection and re-segregation at Sonsoddo.
Sankhwalkar mentioned the influx of various waste types, including hotel and slaughter waste, and the dumping of garbage at black spots. MLA Reginaldo emphasised the need to deter those throwing waste on the roads, suggesting punitive measures such as making them stand at the stinking Sonsoddo dump yard for a few hours.
