PANJIM: In connection with the recent incident of two children found abandoned in a single day, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) has asked the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a strict and urgent investigation into abandonment of children.
The Commission also asked the State police to submit a comprehensive report on abandonment of Children from 2014 onwards, including updates on past cases, recurring patterns and the rehabilitation of such children. The DGP was asked to send an action taken report within a month.
GSCPCR emphasised with the DGP that this incident that occurred on January 27, was a matter of grave concern and asked that stringent action be taken and that the children involved be provided with the necessary care and protection.
Pointing out that the incidents underscored that safeguarding of children is a collective responsibility extending beyond the realms of law enforcement and child welfare organizations, Peter Borges, GSCPCR Chairperson said it also raises serious questions about the societal and systemic support structures in place for the protection and welfare of children.
“Furthermore, it is crucial to understand the magnitude and pattern of such cases to devise effective preventive strategies. Therefore, the Commission requests your office to prepare and submit a comprehensive status report detailing all incidents of child abandonment registered in the state of Goa over the last ten years,” said Borges.
The Commission asked that the report should include the following details: the number of child abandonment cases reported and registered; the demographic details of the children involved; the circumstances and locations of these incidents; the current status of the investigations; the measures taken for the rehabilitation and welfare of the abandoned children; and any identified patterns or trends related to these incidents.
“The compilation of this data is crucial for the Commission to analyse the situation effectively and work collaboratively with your department to develop robust mechanisms for the prevention of such incidents in the future. It will also aid in enhancing the effectiveness of our policies and programs aimed at child protection and welfare,” Borges added.
Police team leaves for Karnataka
MARGAO: A Margao police team has left for Karnataka in connection with the abandonment of two minor children at two different places in Margao.
A senior officer guiding the investigations said the first task was to find from where they travelled to Margao and the reason why they abandoned the children adding that is not known whether the children were theirs or whether they had kidnapped the children.
The team that left for Karnataka will visit the important stations there and check the CCTV footage to find out where they boarded the train.
Police said that the couple had arrived in Margao by Netravati Express, but did not know from where they boarded the train and they are absconding after abandoning the two minor children.
