MARGAO: The Chinchimim gram sabha (GS) passed a second resolution on the Mhadei issue, where it reiterated that the approvals granted by the Central government to the Karnataka government for its detailed project report (DRP) for the diversion of water, be withdrawn immediately.

It may be recalled that Chinchinim was the first panchayat to have already passed a resolution on this issue; however as per the wishes of the local residents, the matter was taken up again on Sunday.

Sarpanch Valentino Barretto emphasised that the diversion of Mhadei river is not just restricted to North Goa but is all an all-Goa issue.

Elsewhere, the gram sabha discussed another pan-Goa issue regarding what the State government is doing to ban plastic usage in Goa.

Barretto said the panchayat has been doing its duty in taking action but questioned how plastic bags beyond the permissible limits are still available in the market and are being manufactured and why the authorities have not stopped this.

The gram sabha felicitated panch member Frank Viegas for getting elected for his second term as the President of the Goa Seamen Association of India (GSAI). Viegas also explained what GSAI is fighting for.

The gram sabha also held a big discussion on the financial handling of the panchayat, be it how much revenue it is earning, how trade tax is being collected or about the financial obligations that the panchayat has to meet.

Sao Matias gram sabha passes resolution for new bridge

PANJIM: The Sao Matias gram sabha on Sunday passed a resolution demanding bridge between Old Goa and Sao Matias and also welcomed the government’s decision to construct a memorial at original site of Saptakoteshwar Temple at Divar.

During the meeting, the villagers submitted a representation to the Sarpanch Supriya Tari for construction of a bridge between Sao Matias and Divar for the convenience of people and students, who they had to depend on ferryboats and were also facing hardships during monsoon.
