Chinchinim PHC serves notices on 2 Varca hotels

Two Varca-based starred hotels are facing action under the Goa Public Health Act for discharge of waste waters into a water nullah as the two hotels have come under the scanner of the health authorities.
The Chinchinim Primary Health Centre has served notices directing the managements to apply for appropriate permission as mandated under Section 6(2) of the Goa Public Health Rules.
In the event of non-compliance with the directives, the health centre has warned of action as prescribed under the Goa Public Health Act. The Primary Health Centre has also reserved the right to carry out periodic checks on the discharged material, without giving prior permission.
The notice follows a site inspection carried out by the sanitary inspector of the health centre on July 28, wherein it came to light that water from the hotel premises were being released by means of pipes into the nullah on the west side. It was also reported that there was foul smell at the site at the time of the inspection.
Medical Officer, Chinchinim Health Centre drew attention of the hotel managements to Section 6 of the Goa Public Health Act, 1987 which prohibits the pollution of any water course or water body unless the discharge is properly treated to the satisfaction of the sanitary authority.
The medical officer pointed out that any discharge of water may be released only after obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the sanitary authority under Section 6(2) of the Goa Public Health Act.
The notices served on the two hotels assume significance given complaints lodged by locals that some of the hotels are discharging their waste and sewage waters into the water bodies.
